Fan Rant: Critics of 'The Dark Knight' Are Allowed to Hate

Look, I thought The Dark Knight had a lot of strong selling points: Combine a deft pace with thoughtful characterizations and a whopping IMAX design that turns the entire experience into a plot-driven theme park ride, and you've got one hefty dose of Batman adrenaline.

Still, comparisons to The Godfather Part II notwithstanding, The Dark Knight isn't foolproof -- in fact, no single movie in history is foolproof. The subjective experience of movie watching ensures that nothing can be universally liked by everyone, and rules of civility insist that humanity respect that truism. It's acceptable to feel passionately about a great work of art, and defend that perspective with rigorous argumentation, but much of the outrage over the minority perspective that The Dark Knight isn't any good has made such practical thinking impossible.

Deemed the first critic to pan the movie, New York's David Edelstein went out of his way to list the allegations against him sent along by various Batman fans. The House Next Door editor Keith Uhlich, meanwhile, fielded over a hundred rants in the comments section following his astute critique of director Christopher Nolan's questionable portrayals of violence. What's particularly shocking about this frightful deluge of negative responses is that many of these people began posting their disapproval before they even saw the movie.

As House Next Door Founder Matt Zoller Seitz points out, a lot of people lashed out after David Fear's Time Out New York review ran last Tuesday, before the film opened. "That's scary," writes Matt. "Is there a collective yearning for a masterpiece out there? Is it a Heath Ledger RIP thing? Or is it groupthink, aided by Warner Bros. hype -- a hive mind phenomenon in which ecstatic love for the film has been unconsciously agreed-upon in advance as the only acceptable response to this film, which in turn means that anyone who dares deviate, and ask for something not necessarily better, but different, is an enemy of the people who must be crushed?"

Whatever the cause, it's shameful. The entire critical practice is founded on the freedom of expression, not to mention the unlimited prospects open minded discourse. That doesn't mean you shouldn't speak out if you disagree with someone -- but use some tact, people. Consider the fascinating, deeply contemplative response to Uhlich's review recently posted at Only the Cinema. Let it serve as an example, lest the Orwellian groupthink Seitz detects winds up dominating the marketplace.

I don't really think the issue was that this critic has his own opinion which was that he didn't care for the film, thats fine. Some people will love it while others wont thats how it goes with any film. My only issue was that he complained and had a fit that he recieved some hate mail from fans for it. If your gonna be a critic and get paid to publicly judge a film then you have to be capable of handling how people react, thats part of the job

why are people giving the guy so much hassle??at the end of the day EVERYONE'S A CRITIC!!!

THE WORLD WOULD BE SUCH A BORING PLACE IF WE ALL LIKED THE SAME!!!

it gives for great discussion on the web when opinions do not match!!

when it comes to making comic films a director is taking a big risk you are never gonna please all fans!!

i think nolan's take on the dark knight (personally) was awesome and i'm a huge bale fan!!as a fan of batman in general,i like the screen adaptations as i'm more of a film watcher than reader.

nolan for me directed the finest batman films followed closely by tim burton's batman.

although quite camp and comical batman forever and batman and robin introduce some new villians onto the big screen.

(the one thing that shocked me about the dark knight was how violent it was and yet it was still rated only a 12a in the uk...).

DonMichael wrote...."Secondly, people bashed David Edelstein because he insulted Heath Ledger in an unethical, and foremost, unprofessional manner."

I read the review and I didn't see the insult. I think that once again, many people are letting emotion get in the way of facts and reason.

I am one that thinks that Heath Ledger isn't even remotely a good actor. The acting he has done in most of his movies was terrible, and I'd be just as willing to state that were he alive in front of me, just as much as I would be willing to say it and get flamed by all of the kids here on this site.

I read his review twice, and I'm inclined to say that it's intelligent, factual, and somewhat true even if I don't agree with him on it being a bad movie.

I love The Dark Knight, and I think that all the actors, Heath Ledger included, did an incredible job brining these great comic characters to life.

Every one of us on this site fancy ourselves critics. Edelstein is just more educated in doing so.

Who cares if it's "not even real"? It's still cool. Why does it have to be "even real" for it to be interesting? Often times, fan made posters, trailers, etc. are better than the originals.

IM ALL FOR THERE OPINION AT LEAST THERE ARE MORE POSITIVE CRITICS OUT THERE RAVEING INSTEAD OF TRASHING THE DARK KNIGHT. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT THE DVD SALES AND WILL BE LIKE WHEN DARK KNIGHT HITS SHELVES IN DEC. I WOULDNT BE SURPRISE IF IT BROKE THE PRE ORDER RECORD

Secondly, people bashed David Edelstein because he insulted Heath Ledger in an unethical, and foremost, unprofessional manner. Go read that review and tell me he was not out of line. I respect different opinions but not insulting people directly with disgusting accusations after they have passed on.

fillopx5 wrote...."I think especially for comics fans. these characters can become very personal."

You are exactly right! I've been reading comics for over 30 years, and for better or for worse, I know many comic characters better than I know my own family and friends.

I also know it can be a very trying thing when you see something that you know and love so much twisted and destroyed by outsiders just trying to make a quick buck by catering to the masses.

That's not necessarily how I feel, but when I owned a comic shop, many of my customers felt that way.
