I actually really liked this movie, and I don't care about weather. But this was very good, nice suspense and jump-moments.
Best tornado movie ever!
Bill and Helen's chemestry together in this movie is superb. Action after thrill, looking out for these tornato watchers will keep you on the edge of your seats!
Excellent movie!!! before this i didn't have that much interes in twister!! excellent visual effects
This is the best disaster movie on my list. The first time I saw this movie was back in High School, and I was very amazed by it. Not only it's entertaining to watch, the story was simple to follow.
Jan de Bont (Speed 2) returns to direct this action thriller trying to be like Spielberg, only he's not. It's just ridiculous. They can't hide under a rickety bridge and survive an F4 tornado, among other things. Sitting visuals and effects make for entertaining action, but the story of storm chasers going right into the eye of powerful storms is a little too much. The truck would have been tossed upside down into a tree. Well, the silly science withstanding, the film is somewhat entertaining. Just don't take is seriously at all. 'Real storm chasers aren't dumb enough to sit under an F5 tornado and film it. They'd be dead.' (Guest co review, Jim Buffkin).
Who could not like to watch a movie where Bill Paxton chases off his bride-to-be, an ex-vampire, by chasing tornados. And boy, do I dislike Cary Elwes charecter in this one.
It's been a pretty good story about the tornado chaser... The story just simple, a tornado will come and there are some scientist trying to chase that tornado to test the invention that they made before... Even there are pretty many conversation which is pretty confusing, this movie still thrills me... Especially when the main character approximately just few miles away from the tornado, it really thrills... The effects for the twister thing were great I think, it just makes you feel that you're sucked into that twister... But one problems is the twister got ends to quickly... Mostly, the twister ends after the main character got really near to the twister... But after all, it's been a pretty good movie to watch... Another great disaster movie...
this has to be the best love divorce new love tornado old love flying cows man competition semis blowing up
"Jo Harding" (Helen Hunt) lost her father to an F5 tornado, the most dangerous of its kind. Now she is a scientist out to find out what makes these bad boys tick.
While out with her team, she runs into her soon-to-be ex-husband, "Bill" (Bill Paxton), who left the storm-chasing biz to work as a weatherman. "Bill" is pretty much an expert of how a twister reacts, and can tell what it's about to do by just looking at it. However, what he wants is for "Jo" to complete signing their divorce papers.
While having some small-talk, "Jo" reveals to "Bill" that she had built a new tornado examination device that he designed, but never brought out of the planning stages himself. The machine, which has small plastic balls filled with sensors, was nicknamed "Dorothy," named after the character from "The Wizard of Oz."
Then the predictable happens -- a tornado touches down, and "Bill", along with his new love Melissa (Jami Gertz), join in on the chase. However, they are not alone, as a competing group of storm-chasers, with a much bigger budget, is also chasing the same storms.
When it comes to the story itself, there are many plot holes. First off, the other team is obviously the bad guys when we first meet them -- heck, even their cars are the villainous black. Personally, I'm surprised they aren't given black hats to really make it obvious.
Another thing that is obvious is that "Bill" and "Jo" still care for each other. It would have been nicer if one was presented as one is still in love with the other, while the other slowly realize they are still in love.
A huge problem with this story is character development. "Jo" and "Bill" appear to have the most development, but the rest have little to none. I didn't connect to any of the supporting cast, nor did I connect with the two lead characters at all. Between the frequent tornadoes, there was ample opportunity to develop the characters, but those were totally missed.
The performances from the cast, with exception of the bad guys who are poorly developed and not really seen long on-screen, are pretty good. The team the movie centers around gives the audience a pretty good feel of their relationship as a team. I felt as if these people have known each other for quite some time.
What truly carries this movie is the incredible special effects, which are better for a sound system like the ones in movie theaters. They are quite believable storms thanks to the use of high-powered fans for the wind and the computer graphics. They really nailed the power of tornadoes in this film.
The rest of the visuals are not as memorable. Most of the film's scenes take place in the cabin of the cars used by the team members. They also have shots taken from the air where there is nothing around for miles except crops or trees.
The director, Jan de Bont was handed a script with a weak plot and incredible special effects and a pretty good cast. However, all he could produce was a special effects movie.
This movie would be best viewed in wide-screen format, and stereo surround-sound. Only the special effects makes this film worth seeing, and that is the only reason I can recommend it.
such a dissapoint to any film I mean theres a massive tornado thats lifting semi strucks off the ground but they hang on to a poll with a belt and they survives
I don't know why but it really scared me? It's not even meant to be scary i don't think. i watched it several times one fortnight when i was on holiday on a movie channel i think. it was good. not that good though
dnt rilli no bout it by the way for the last one i dnt love the wizard of oz i dnt rilli like it it alright tho
I was obsessed with this movie for a short time because I was really interested in tornadoes after this movie was made. This movie still blows me away when it came to the action.
I always like to see this film again. One of those films which left a great impression on me when I was a kid.
Great special effects, cool story and all in all one of my all-time favourite disaster flicks. Mother Nature sure doesn't get more exciting than this :-)
LOVE Helen Hunt, Philip Seymour Hoffman (reminds me also love Laura Linney and Matthew Broderick -- free association here!) Bill Paxton is adorable.
Cool to watch, but the storyline just didn't understand if it was going to be pseudo science/disaster flick or a sappy love story.
I have to admit that this was a pretty good movie, and I think that Bill Paxton is a really cute guy to be chasing twisters! :)

Amazing graphics for the F5 tornado. Not bad for a 90s movie. And I think I saw Rob Schneider somewhere in there. Can anyone verify?

The graphics for the tornadoes were quite good, and there was quite a bit of humour in the film. Especially when the cows were flying in the twister lol!
this movie was interesting especially the part where the cow is in the tornado lol
I love this movie, and even though they to use God's name in this movie and their ain't no acknoledgement of God or Church in this movie, I can see the God in this movie!
