Very charming little tale without being too cutsie-wootsie. Good message for a family movie and very nice performances by Ricci, Witherspoon (who also produced this film) and Peter Dinklage who is one that always impresses me. But (be still my heart)James McAvoy was an oohhh so fine for this role.
it was one of those fariy tale stories but it was really good. very cute def a family film. i don't know y but it reminded me of that movie Nanny McPhee. lol
It's nice to know that we have the power to change ourselves, at least that is what I got from this movie and also to be yourself no matter what other people think. It's a nice sSaturday afternoon movie whereyou don't have to think alot.
A whimsical, funny modern fairy tale that kept me entertained the entire time. Granted, I've rated this a bit high, but it has my imaginary husband Nick Frost in a bit part, which just adds to how much I love this movie. Highly recommended.
has a great story! and wonderful actors! this one is not an ordinary movie, i really thought it was the same with the others but i was a little bit of mistaken, anyway, i was really amazed by james mcavoy, he really gets nice parts these days. he's always with a big bunch of award winning actors. reese, catherine and cristina are pretty amazing indeed. the score was superb. everything just fell into the right places. but i was just a little disappointed with some parts of the story i was kind of feeling that the attraction between ricci and mcavoy's characters needed a little push. but i still felt them. :)
I like the story, a light fairytale movie that I love always.. With christina ricci and james mcavoy that always act great!
It's impossible to hide Christiana Ricci's beauty, even with a pig nose. Not a bad movie though for anyone interested in a sweet little story.
I love Christina Ricci & Reese Witherspoon, so this was a must see. I think it was an enjoyable modern day fairytale, showing from the opposite end of the spectrum, with the still lovely, but abnormal "princess."
I think Ricci was the perfect cast for this role! I also liked McAvoy as the not so charming prince. Think they had just the right amount of chemistry for this movie to be successful. Witherspoon was good as normal playing punky, sparatic girl befriending Penelope.
I loved the whole storyline behind the film, learning to love yourself; flaws & everything! Think it is geared towards more adults than the younger ones.
finally a great fairytale !lovely and enjoyable, and i don't know why they were so discussed by her nose she looked really cute.
Really good movie. Loved it so much. A few mean parts as the girl isn't hideous at all. But loved it.
An enchanting modern day fairy tale. May have gotten alot of negative reviews but thats the problem with this one, you have to have a little imagination.
it was really cute, but i didn't like how everyone in the movie thought she was like, really hidious and scary, when her nose was just sorta funny looking...
This movie was amazing! Every aspect of it thrilled you, and James McAvoy in it wasn't to bad either ;)
I watched this film only after it was reccomended to me by a friend, and I was so not disappointed! Yes, it is a film targeting a young crowd, but there is SO MUCH in it that appeals to an adult audience. The film, simply put, is beautiful. Beautiful describes the story and morals, the acting, and last, and probably most of all, the scenery and cinematography! Everything about this film is magical, and extremely captivating! Penelope is a definate MUST SEE!
This modern-day fairy-tale was on the shelf for two years (made in 2006, released in early 2008 - and only somewhat at that point). Hard to figure what the concerns were. It's a little uneven, and not too funny, but nice enough. Penelope is a rich blue-blood born into a family curse resulting in having the nose (and, I think, ears) of a pig. It will (supposedly) take a society blue blood to lift said curse by falling for her, so her mother (Catherine O'Hara in overdrive mode) conspires to get her hitched to the first guy who can look at her without running out of the room, jumping out a window, etc. (surprisingly, it takes several potential sudors for this to occur) and through various contrivances, Penelope soon discovers Max (James McAvoy, filmed prior to "Atonement" though released after the ultra-serious World War II British romance), a hard-gambling swindler who sees her for who she truly is from the get-go and regrets how he treats her from the start.
OK, so this isn't incredibly deep stuff and it's silly and all, but Christina Ricci is cute in the title role, I liked a throw-away extended cameo (credited) from producer Reese Witherspoon as a friend in the big city that Penelope meets, and I liked the somewhat muddled message that one should accept who they are and come to love themselves before they can love anyone else (though the transmission of the message is a bit garbled under some "Shrek"-like twists and turns in the final third). Still, a worthy effort (maybe a rental, if not worthy of a trip to the multiplex).
exceeded my expectations... it started out as a fairy tale story then it evolved into something more tender, heartwarming. not boring at all, kinda funny actually. quite something to see witherspoon as a supporting actress or something like that.
Sweet, fairy tale type movie. Resse Witherspoon is barely in this, which surprised me, but quite honestly Christina Ricci and James McAvoy steal the film anyhow. It has a great message to it and is a film all ages would enjoy.
Very cute movie!...Predictable...but Christina is just too cute!...with or without the nose! And Reese Witherspoon shows some versatility in a non starring role....very commendable!
Very nice adaptation of a fair tail set to the background of the real world. Christina Ricci sparkle as the unfortunate title character and makes you sympathize with her.
Not perfect by any meand whatsoever, but made enjoyable by Christina Ricci who shows yet again just what makes her so special as an actress.
Catherine O'Hara and Peter Dinklage add immensely to the overall effect.
Cute for sure, but nothing more than light entertainment.
Pretty much follows the romantic comedy formula of mistaken identity, deception, finding who you want to be, but this one won me over. Part of it was technical- the movie is visually entreating, much of it was the characters- quirky and endearing, and a lot of it was the chemistry between McAvoy and Ricci. The characters could have been deeper and the themes could have been explored a bit more, but this is a romantic fairy tale, and it succeeded at that.

Fantastic and wonderful! Lovely and enchanted! But I got a doubt...if she acepted herself as she was...why her nose was gone? I prefer her as a pig than as a normal girl. Well, its a movie...thats why in EARTH people prefer the beauty knowing that beauty dosnt stay forever..it gets old and dirty...and then dies...and its true...your not beautiful forever...its sad but true. People should accept them as they are, by heart, not cause she or he is handsome or gorgeous or has a great body...hell no. Anyway, great cast, great film, cool and funny...its worth it...yeah it is. Recomend it!

i heard Russell Brand is in this film? is he? or is it just hearsay?
OMG!!! IT LOOKS SO GOOD!!! IT DESCRIBES ME WITH MY PIGGY NOSE 2!!!
At certain times in the movie I thought Simon Woods looked a bit like Paul Bettany.
the story is a bit messy, but the actors are gr8,james mcavoy is fit as usual nd i think the acting saved the story in a way, worth the watch =D
this looks good not only because of the fact that it turns out to be a love story and we all love {L.O.V.E.} But it is a story of compassion. We all need to know of compassion. Christ preached it but we still didn't get it. He preached it through music; trough lyics of other singers voices, but did we get it? No! So lets try and get it when He opens up some whop butt in a movie, this is God's Compassion trying to say no matter what race, no matter what color, no matter what size, no matter what the person did He will still love us and He does. Come on people open your hearts and if not your hearts then your eyes and if not your eyes then at least read what I'm saying and try and understand it. Christ died for you not because it was something He had to do but because He wanted to, it was His compassion for us. God Bless!
