Although considered stupid, my friends and I can quote scene after scene. I wish I could buy it right now.
Disappointing film with a handful of laughs and a lot of overused gags that aren't great. The main character is funny for a little while but it wears off after a little while and the main point of the film - the dance - isn't funny enough.
Napoleon Dynamite's been accurately described to me by more than one person as a movie that makes you go, "Huh? O... K..." while you're watching it, only to have it grow funnier in hindsight. And while this is actually true, I can't really say I'm a fan of the movie. It feels like a caricature of dorkdom that isn't saying anything about dorkdom, and its characters are too extreme overall to form any sort of connection with. In the end, the titular loser is just a freak show, a shallow, disposable piece of pop culture (I mean, how different is a character like this than, say, someone like William Hung?). "March to the beat of your own drum," the movie may say, "but we will laugh at you." This is not to say one should feel guilty chuckling at the social misfits on parade here; it's just that there isn't anything more to it than that. That the film is shot mostly as a destinationless series of gags is something to admire as a counter to the usual; that the series of gags might as well be 90 minutes worth of the same comedy show skit is lamentable and tedious. Also, I may be one of the few people on the planet who doesn't like the acting job by Jon Heder -- I always got the feeling he was smarter than his character, and that hurt his believability.
It had great moments and others that fell flat. It's hard not to quote some of those stupid lines though.
Unique, and best after multiple viewings. The supporting cast is just phenomenal, and the director really knew what he was doing in bringing Idaho to life.
I'm not sure if this is a movie, or just crap complied together. I can't underatnd what is so great about this worthless movie.
i finally got round to watching movie that got lots of hype around it but i have to say after watcing it i was dissapointed and i thought it was a quite poor film i didnt think it was that funny or entertaining
Jon Heder, Tina Majorino (Andre, Waterworld), and Efren Ramirez play in a sweetly nerdy comedy about a misfit imaginative boy, (who probably is Autistic), and a love interest, and a run for school persident. Has more Y Generation kids appeal than it does for the X Gen adults who loved Rushmore, its more cynical cousin, (ripping it off actually), but is actually slow in parts. Set in an Idaho school instead of a preppy academy, as in Rushmore, (eight years before), and not a sequel, the story does have a Rushmore like loser or two. It's as if the older brother in this is Rushmore, and the teenager is Napoeon. Yeah, but it's not a sequel. Anyway, it does end with a hilarious talent show, even if it's not about Vietnam, but about a parody of Breakin'. Gosh, it's not a rip off. Gosh!!! It has mad skills. Well kid, it's derivitive, like it or not. (Reviewed as though Napoleon would review it).
Maybe this is kind of like the new generation's Better Off Dead. Much more deadpan and with new family dynamics and a whole different take on realtionships. Each time I see it I like it a bit more. I wan't all that impressed the first time I saw it.
So bad it was funny... In my all Honest opinion I would think they were trying to make a crappy movie!
"Napoleon Dynamite" is one of those "either you get it or you don't" movies, and the reason why I got it is that it felt like a summary of my seven years of middle school and high school, plus maybe the first couple of years of college. I think I always was the nerdiest guy in my class (and now that I teach, things haven't improved much), so that I have been through much of what is depicted in the movie (except I am not from Idaho and there are no yellow buses or lockers where I am from.) Take the time travel episode, for instance. I never bought a time machine (eBay didn't exist back then), I don't even think I ever believed a machine could do the trick (though of course I did fantasize about H.G. Welles' contraption and Doc Brown's De Lorean), but I wouldn't swear I never experimented with the psychological method of time travel expounded in "Bid Time Return" and New Age books (I know I tried past life regression 0_o), and I did want at some point to build a robot. I went so far as to bring a big metal barrel into my garage because I thought it looked like R2D2, and my mum just told me to take it away because it was smelly and rusty (a much brainier (and older) friend of mine did build a robot though, and even the adults were impressed, but that's another story.) I went through all the same embarrassment with girls, the obsessing about martial arts (I even contemplated buying sai at one point, but unfortunately I never found one at a second hand shop), the fascination with monsters, the bullying, etc.
Two things I felt the movie did not quite capture is how most of this behaviour is programmed by TV shows and comic books (the characters do not seem to be doing much reading or watching, so that their mental landscapes seem to be self-generated), and the intense emotions that are involved in all the stupidity of adolescence, from the elation at thinking you are some sort of genius, secret agent or superhero, to the unbearable depression of being "rejected" by a girl who probably didn't even notice you were there. The main characters in the movie seem always to be in a sort of anethetized daze, their minds floating in geostationary orbit while their bodies go through the motions of everyday life.
Artistically speaking, I found the film quite brilliant. It mostly uses still shots, which it composes a bit like the "nouvelle cuisine" plates in the main titles, with bright colours from the seventies and early eighties. Most of the music and clothes are also from the early eighties, so even though the film is definitely set in the 21st century (with the Internet and chat rooms, for instance), the esthetics is definitely retro. As for the humour, if you?ve seen some of David Lynch?s sillier fare ? such as "The Cowboy and the Frenchman" (definitely not his brightest moment) or "On the Air" - you know what to expect. Indeed, if you had told me that it was a David Lynch movie, I might have believed you. It's got a song to rival "In Heaven", shots of people with tuned out faces and quite a few surrealistic moments.
Actually, I envy the people who do not get this movie. That it felt so autobiographical says a lot about how pathetic I am.
Jon Heder stars as Napoleon Dynamite, a troubled teenager at high school.
Unpopular, a misfit and overall strange guy, Napoleon faces many problems - how to get a girl to go to the prom with him - how to get his one and only friend Pedro elected as school president - and how to get rid of his over-the-top uncle.
Unwittingly, yet always wanting it, he becomes a new kind of hero.
Jon Heder is brilliant as the strange hero. Costarring Aaron Ruell as his wierd brother, Efren Ramirez as Pedro and Tina Majorino as the only girl who gives Napoleon the time of day.
A strange, odd tale that is brilliantly funny in a very dry form.
-"What are you gonna do today, Napoleon?"
-" Whatever I feel like I wanna do, GOSH!"
haha, frickin hilarious!
The story doesn't really go anywhere, but I guess that is true to life. It is actually fairly realistic despite the fact that the characters appear to be really exaggerated.
weird, strang film!
had its own kinda indy style.
was funny at times but just stupid, reminded me alot of that liam lynch video "my united states of whatever"
i thought the only good scene in the thing was when napoleon did the dance in front of his high school to help his friend get the presedentcy. Now thats good comedy:)
This movie kinda made me ashamed to live in Idaho. Especially because I was working customer service at the time and everyone who called in asked where I was from. "Idaho? Like Napoleon Dynamite?!" *facepalm*
The first time I watched this movie I wasn't too sure about it. But everytime I watch it, it gets funnier. I notice little things that are just too hilarious!
At first this movie was really boring but the second time i watched it was extraordinarily funny, its just one of those movies
I LOVED IT ACTUALLY..LOL..
MY DAUGHTER MADE ME WATCH IT.... MY FAVORITE SCENE IN THE MOVIE ?
DISCO DANCING!!
lovable dimwit slowly moves through high school looking and sounding like he is permanently stoned. he is one of the most unique and funny characters to be played by jon heder, a great funny film iwth some very tender moments.
I kept waiting for the plot to start, and then the movie was over, and there was still no plot. I would like those two hours back, please.
