Plot: "American Teen" follows the lives of five teenagers--a jock, a popular girl, a heartthrob, an artsy girl and a geek--in one small town in Indiana through their senior year of high school. We see the ...( read more read more... )insecurities, the cliques, the jealousies, the first loves and heartbreaks, and the struggle to make profound decisions about the future. Filming daily for 10 months, filmmaker Nanette Burstein developed a deep understanding of her subjects. The result is a film that goes beyond the enduring stereotypes of high school to render complex young people trying to find their way into adulthood. With extraordinary intimacy and a great deal of humor, "American Teen" captures the pressures of growing up--pressures that come from one's peers, one's parents, and not least, oneself.

A documentary that follows five students in their senior year in a small Indiana town has its moments, but overall isn't any more groundbreaking and impressive as a decent episode of True Life or Made on MTV. First off is it really a documentary, because I'm not buying it all, it's hard not to imagine the director at times egging on the teenagers to say this or "let's have you ponder about your life as you look out across the lake." I was also disappointed to find that a relationship between the popular jock and the not so popular rebel turned out to be, or seemed to be, just an idea to get little school girls like me to see the film. But what the hell, I guess I was entertained enough by the personalities and the teenage high school drama that I remember so well.

I have issues with this film. A lot of issues. Is it a great documentary? By no means. It doesn't really show us or touch anything new. Also, there are so many obvious staged or reshot scenes. I'm not saying that anything that happens is false, it is just that the director's hand is seen far too much. However, all that being said, I had a profound reaction to this movie. Not totally from the content, but from a few scenes. Most contain Hannah who is essentially a real-life Juno and someone I would have done anything to have dated in high school. I was like her in high school in some ways and like her in a lot of ways now. She is truly the beacon to focus on in this film. However, another scene starred the "bitch." It was about that pressure about being accepted to college. I remember that all too well. Life and death hinged on a letter. The scene with her admissions letter (I won't spoil anything) is perhaps one of the most emotionally genuine things I've seen in years, and certainly the most in this film. I feel kind of deceived by the director, however, I was deceived well. In the end, it didn't change anything I felt about high school, only confirmed it: I'm so I graduated and have nothing to do with it anymore.

i'm not sure what i thought about this movie just yet. it was kind of a mesh of mean girls, the hills, kill bill, mtv's made, and a documentary. personally, it's too early for me to be looking back at high school like this. the beginning is slow... i thought about walking out.

This film just gave the a world another (and more profound- since its 'real-life') that life of a teenager is nothing but backstabbing, sex and whose most popular, which only 75% of the life of teenager

this was a great flim which come as a surprase to me since it did not look very intersting in the pewiews. In fact i thought it was going to be very silly and clicha. it show high school the way it really is i think it would of been east to edit the praspent in to chilchs but they were prresened as deep and dinmen people.

a really interesting documentary that I was fortunate enough to see in a private screening with my film school in New York.
It follows the life of a couple of teenagers through their senior year. My big problem with this movie is some of the scenarios just seemed to hokey and set up but then the flip side is the movie wouldn't have been as entertaining so it isn't that big a deterrent.

A doco on American teens that feels more like a teen drama. All the drama, heartache and fun of high school captured perfectly by the 5 different charac...I mean people with a great soundtrack to boot. For anyone who grew up in America or grew up watching American teen movies.

The access the filmmakers achieved is so incredible that it causes me to question the candidness of the subject. I hope it's legit because the stories were compelling.
